The Ohio Senate has approved Senate Bill 233, which mandates that drivers must stop for on-track equipment at rail crossings. The bill was introduced by State Senator Stephanie Kunze, a Republican from Dublin.

Railroads utilize large and heavy equipment for various purposes, including track repairs, snow clearance, and other construction activities to ensure tracks remain safe and unobstructed.

Senator Kunze emphasized the importance of this legislation, stating: "This legislation prioritizes the safety of Ohio drivers and workers, and establishes an extra layer of precaution." She further explained her role as Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee: "I have heard from rail workers, mechanics, and representatives of rail companies in regards to safety and procedure surrounding trains, and SB 233 helps close some of those gaps."

The bill will now proceed to the Ohio House for further consideration.
