Residents and visitors of the City of Hilliard will start to see scooters around town as the City begins the process of assessing its sidewalks.
Beginning May 23, all City sidewalks, trails and curb ramps will be surveyed to inventory the condition of pavement for prioritization of repair and maintenance projects. City of Hilliard Transportation Asset Manager Roberta Barkhimer said the data collected will be used to facilitate the City’s sidewalk maintenance program and improve accessibility.
“Assessing the sidewalks, trails and curb ramps will allow the City to come up with a plan to maintain a safe sidewalk network that will not only meet federal regulations, but benefit the entire community, especially pedestrians with physical limitations and mobility challenges,” said Barkhimer.
The City has contracted with StreetScan for the survey. The Massachusetts-based company provides scooter-mounted sensing technology to assess sidewalk conditions.
StreetScan will determine the health of each sidewalk and identify defects including tripping hazards, cracks, and bumps. This data will be used to help the City prioritize where repairs are needed and to ensure that all 200 miles of City sidewalks are kept in the best condition.
Sidewalk and curb inventorying is expected to take approximately two months, with end results available in late July. The next phase will take place late 2022 and include sidewalk, trail and curb rehabilitation.
